The inaugural exhibitions:

30 May 2010 - 23 January 2011
Curated by: Pippo Ciorra, Alessandro D’Onofrio, Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, Gabi Scardi
SPAZIO portrays the spirit of the museum and will be the first thematic presentation of MAXXI’s Art and Architecture collections.
The initial stimulus for SPAZIO came from the dense texture of superimposed spaces of Hadid’s architecture. This presentation, which fully interprets MAXXI’s interdisciplinary nature, will include more than 80 works from the Art collection (including works by Alighiero Boetti, Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, Sol Lewitt, Giuseppe Penone, Grazia Toderi and Francesco Vezzoli) exhibited along an itinerary winding inside and outside the museum, in dialogue with site specific installations by 10 international architecture studios (tra cui Diller, Scofidio e Renfro, Lacaton & Vassal Architetcs, R&Sie(n), West 8).

As part of the exhibition:

Italian geographies
Curated by Maristella Casciato, Pippo Ciorra and Margherita Guccione, produced by Studio Azzurro.
A 40-metre-long video installation recounting sites, protagonists and stories of Italian architecture and design from the mid-twentieth century to the present through drawings, photographs, interview and film clips reworked and assembled by Studio Azzurro.

NETinSPACE
Curated by Elena Giulia Rossi
An exploration of Net Art investigating the contaminations between the virtual and physical worlds through the works of artists including Miltos Manetas, Bianco-Valente and Stephen Vitiello.

The winners of the international MAXXIduepercento competition:
Rette di luce nell’iperspazio curvilineo by Maurizio Mochetti
An installation of light and sculptural elements that is both essential and surprising. The work tackles the relationship between visitor and site, becoming in the process, as the artist says, a “spatial barometer”.

Emergency’s Paediatric Centre a Port Sudan Supported by MAXXI by Massimo Grimaldi
Work-in-progress images will document all phases in the construction and opening of the new Emergency hospital at Port Sudan, the reportage being presented in a synchronised dual-video projection on a MAXXI external wall.
